Where did the term "Black Sox" come from?

The term black sox is believed by some to come from the dark and negative view of the scandal itself.  However, others believe that it is because White Sox owner Charles Comiskey refused to clean the players' uniforms, saying that the players had to pay to clean their own uniform.  The players are said to have refused, letting their uniforms get dirtier and dirtier, until Comiskey broke down and washed the uniforms himself, but not without taking the cost out of the players' salaries.
